School Tours

The Drum Barracks Civil War Museum offers two educational programs designed specifically to engage students. It is our goal to provide a memorable tour for the hundreds of schoolchildren who visit us and instill in them an understanding of life during the Civil War.

The Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, Drum Barracks Garrison & Society, staff, and volunteers are dedicated to providing an entertaining yet educational experience for schoolchildren.

We request one chaperone per 10 children, a $1.00 donation per child, and a $5 donation per adult. Your organization may issue a check to Drum Barracks Garrison & Society for the donation amount, or you may pay by cash, or credit card at the time of your tour. This is an optional donation and is appreciated but not mandatory.

 Living History Program

This program is open to groups of 60 to 100 students and is best suited for grades 3rd to 8th.

Schools will participate in an interactive program with immersive activities whose section leaders are clothed in Civil War attire.

Students will be split into groups and will rotate through four workshops focusing on different aspects of the Civil War. Workshop activities include Civil War medicine, a student-orientated house tour, the life of a soldier, and the U.S. Camel Corps. Students will get to attend all the workshops during their visit.

This program is only offered on Fridays (subject to availability) and must be scheduled at least four weeks in advance. The program will last from 9:30 am - 11:30 am. We ask that your group arrive by 9:15 am for a 9:30 am start time.
