Tuesday, January 10                                    Civil War Book Club

7:00 pm      The monthly discussion group of the Richard Rollins Civil War Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Drum Barracks Library. This month the group will have its annual “Movie Night.” Bring a DVD of your favorite movie, show a few minutes to the group and convince them they just have to see it all for themselves! Popcorn provided!

Fri., Sat. and Sun., Feb. 3, 4 and 5              2nd California at Fort Tejon

The 2nd California Volunteer Infantry will welcome visitors to experience day to day life on a mid 1860’s California U. S. Army post. Both military and civilian impressions welcomed.  Period correct attire only. Saturday and Sunday will provide period activities that will allow military participants to experience barracks life and training of the typical soldier. Enlisted military personnel will sleep in Fort Tejon’s original barracks, Friday and Saturday nights, officers and female civilians will be housed in the officers quarters.

The Civil War Re-Enactors Society holds its annual reenactment at Mooney Grove Park in Visalia. Saturday battles are at 1 and 3 pm; Sunday at 11am and 1.

Saturday, November 17                               Remembrance Day

2:00pm   For the third year, the Drum Barracks Museum joins in the national remembrance and celebration of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address given at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 19, 1863. The event is sponsored in Gettysburg by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and will be sponsored here by the Gen. W. S. Rosecrans Camp No. 2, Department of the Pacific, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and their Auxiliary, the ASUVCW. 

 

Saturday, November 24                               “Decorate the Drum” Day

10 am to 5 pm  Join our volunteers as we pull out those Civil War-era decorations and cover the Museum from top to bottom in Christmas cheer. All hands are needed for whatever amount of time you have available!

 

Sat. and Sun., December 1 and 2                “A Civil War Christmas”

From 11 am to 4 pm, this will be the 13th annual holiday celebration at the Museum.

 

Sunday, December 9                                    Wilmington Holiday Parade

Starting at noon, the parade moves down Avalon Boulevard. This is the most fun parade anywhere.  Join us in period dress- Union and Confederates will march side by side in this delightful community event.

Events Planned for the Civil War Sesquicentennial

 

2012: 

We celebrate 25 years as a museum! This year marks the 25th anniversary of the official opening of the Museum to the public under the Museum’s first director, Marge O’Brien. A special observance is planned for Saturday, September 22.

 

The Sons of Union Veterans and Auxiliary will host the National Encampment in Los Angeles at the LAX Marriott Hotel from August 9 through 11, and plan to tour the Drum Barracks Thursday, August 9. The Daughters of Union Veterans gather from August 8-12 for their annual convention, and will also include the Museum in their plans.

 

We will recognize the march of the California Column across the deserts of the southwest to assist in driving Confederate forces back into Texas at the annual Picacho Peak State Park Reenactment  March 10-11 and with the Army of the Frontier from San Diego and Imperial Counties.

 

2013:

In February, we recognize President Abraham Lincoln’s issue of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the areas of the Union in rebellion.

 

In July we will offer “Turning Points” with an exhibit and event to highlight two major areas of conflict: Vicksburg and Gettysburg.

 

2014:

In late summer we are planning another “Hispanics in the Civil War” recognizing that the men of the Native California Cavalry were recruited and enlisted in 1864. 

 

2015:  

In April we will remember the tragic assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

 

We will commemorate “Appomattox and Beyond” as we recall how our nation began the process of reconciliation.

 

2016;

We will recognize the April 6, 1866 founding of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), which was to support and assist former Union soldiers.
